Best Alternating Pressure Mattress Reviews 2020: The Ultimate Guide

Alternating Pressure Mattress review

An alternating pressure mattress is your modern day solution to bedsores and development of pressure points in people who are bedridden or have pain in their back, legs, or elsewhere on their body.

You can find these alternating air pressure mattresses in hospitals and other medical facilities as well because of the relief that it imparts to all patients.

The great thing about these alternating pressure mattresses and pressure pads is that their use is not just limited to patients. If you are generally uncomfortable on your bed, you can make use of it just as well.

What is an Alternating Pressure Mattress?

The first question that comes to mind is, of course, what is an alternating pressure mattress, exactly.

An alternating air pressure mattress consists of air cells or air bubbles. When you switch on the motor, some of the cells inflate, and then they alternate the inflation of the cells from time to time.

This way, the mattress distributes pressure all over the body of the user instead of pinning it down on one location.

And because of this:

The development of pressure sores on the body is prevented.

Keep in mind, though:

An alternating pressure mattress does not nullify the need to turn over on your bed or move around.

Only people who are bedridden completely should depend on the alternating pressure of the mattress. Healthy people should move around along with use the alternating air pressure mattress.

Review

We unpacked this vive alternating pressure mattress and decided to feel it out first to make some initial impressions.

To our pleasant surprise, the mattress seemed to be of very good quality.

We were also happy with the fact that it did not impart any “new mattress smell”. This smell I very common and more or less expected with new bedding products.

We then spread it over our current mattress and noticed that there were no straps to hold the pressure pad in place.

Naturally, this made us somewhat concerned about the Anti-decubitus mattress slipping out from underneath us when we moved during our sleep.

The anti-decubitus mattress was, however, a very good fit on our mattress.

On inflating the mattress, we noticed that the motor was very quiet, almost silent.

The mattress also inflated very quickly, within 15 minutes approximately.

The mattress is very easy to set up as well.

Our first time of sleeping on it, we were very happy with how comfortable it was.

It was very soft and breathable as well, so we did not get hot or sweaty anytime in the night.

However, you will need to adjust the stiffness to your preference before sleeping on it because, at the highest setting, the bubbles become very stiff.

Because of these stiff bubbles, this vive alternating pressure mattress may turn out quite lumpy.

We can safely say that this alternating pressure mattress is excellent for pressure sores and different types of pain as well.

Overall, this mattress is quite inexpensive and offers very good value for money.

Pros

  • No chemical odor
  • Quiet pump
  • Soft and breathable material
  • Inexpensive and good value

Cons

  • No straps to hold it in place

2- Drive Medical Med Aire Alternating Pressure Pump and Pad System

Review

On unpacking this anti decubitus mattress, we noticed that it was made out of a plastic material. It seemed to be of decent quality.

We also noticed that this mattress came with the “new mattress smell” and it was quite strong.

We were able to air it out quite fast, which was a plus.

The mattress is very easy to put together and fits nicely on the bed.

The inflation pump of this alternating pressure mattress has a quiet humming sound which might be soothing to some people.

The sound is not irritating at all, though.

The mattress was able to inflate very fast as well.

When sleeping on it, we were pleased by the alternating pressure.

We can safely recommend this mattress to anyone who has bedsores to heal or any muscle pain.

However, you will possibly need to turn down the stiffness of the bubbles since they can get very big and very firm.

The lumpiness of the mattress in this state is a lot more uncomfortable than it is comfortable.

Another thing we noticed about this pressure pad was that the plastic material it was made out of was not breathable at all.

We got very hot and sweaty in the middle of the night, which can mean bad news for those air-conditioning bills!

You also have to be careful with this pressure altering mattress because it can get damaged very easily in rough use.

Overall, this alternating pressure mattress is inexpensive and offers good value for money.

Pros

  • Quiet inflation pump
  • Excellent for bed sores
  • Offers good value for money

Cons

  • Material is not breathable
  • Easily damaged during rough use

Review

On opening the packaging of this alternating pressure mattress, we noticed that the material was quite flimsy and thin.

We recommend that you be careful when using it and not letting children and pets get too close because it can rip easily.

We were grateful that this pressure relief mattress did not have any chemical odor or toxic fumes to it.

The motor of this alternating pressure mattress is also very quiet and does not disturb your sleep.

The mattress is of a good size and easily covers our bed.

It has no straps so it can slip if you move around too much.

However, the mattress does not clump, no matter how much you move, which is excellent.

The material this mattress is made of is very soft and breathable and lets you sleep peacefully at night without making you hot and sweaty.

We do assure you that this mattress is excellent for pressure sores and the air cells are just the right size and firmness for anyone.

Overall this mattress is a little on the expensive side but offers good value for money.

Pros

  • The mattress does not clump
  • Soft and breathable material
  • Good firmness of air cells

Cons

  • The material is delicate and can rip easily

Review

On unpacking this mattress too, we noticed that the material seemed quite thin and delicate.

Again, we suggest that you do not make very rough use out of it.

Other than that, we did not notice any chemical odor that most beddings have.

This mattress is also fairly easy to set up and inflate.

The motor is very quiet and does not disrupt your sleep in any way.

Unfortunately, the plastic material of the pressure pad is not breathable at all.

This means that it can get hot and sweaty in the night and you might want to sleep in a cooler room with it.

Other than that, this anti decubitus mattress is very soft and does wonders for pressure sores anywhere on the body.

You will want to adjust the stiffness since the bubbles can get very firm on high settings.

Overall this alternating pressure mattress is inexpensive and offers great value for money.

Pros

  • Very quiet motor
  • Very soft
  • Offers good value for money

Cons

  • Flimsy material
  • Material is not breathable and can get very hot

  • Can help in relieving bedsores and pain from ulcers
  • 130 air cells
  • The air pump is low-noise and efficient
  • Very easy to set up and pack away

Review

This mattress also seemed to be made out of flimsy and thin material when we touched it first.

We like the fact that it is waterproof, which means that it will be very easy to clean, though.

It is also easy to set up and inflate.

The motor that comes with this mattress is quiet and does not disrupt sleep at all.

We did not like the fact that the mattress was not very soft or comfortable. You need a good topper to sleep peacefully at night.

Other than that, the material is not breathable at all, so you tend to get very hot and sweaty in the middle of the night.

We were happy with the fact that this mattress does not slip off of the bed easily.

Overall this mattress is inexpensive and offers good value for money.

Pros

  • Quiet motor
  • Easy to clean
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Not very soft or comfortable on its own
  • The material is not breathable
  • The material is flimsy

Verdict

Overall, the best alternating pressure mattress out of all of these is the Vive Alternating Pressure Pad. It has all the qualities of a good pressure altering air mattress like a quiet pump, a good quality breathable fabric, and settings that can change the firmness of the bubbles. It is also quite inexpensive, which makes it the best pressure altering mattress in the market.

The Best Mattress for Back Pain

You should pair your pressure altering mattress with the best mattress for back pain for optimal results. Even if you do not experience any such discomfort, this combination will ensure that you do not go through such issues for a long time.

Things to Look for When Buying an Alternating Pressure Mattress

1- Number of Air Cells

A large number of air cells means that the distribution of pressure along the body will be evener. Fewer air cells can make the mattress feel lumpy. One hundred thirty air cells or more is a good number to have.

2- Fabric

The fabric of the mattress must be soft and breathable. A non-breathable, plastic covering will make you very hot and sweaty during the night, and you will have to invest in a mattress topper as well.

3- Pump

Since the pump of an alternating pressure mattress runs all night long, you need to make sure that it is quiet enough to keep you asleep during the night.

4- Firmness

Make sure the stiffness of the air bubbles in the mattress is adjustable so you can adjust it to your needs and not sleep on an overly lumpy bed.

What Mattresses Prevent Bed Sores?

Mattresses that alternate air pressure within their cells are excellent for preventing bed sores.

Other than that, you can also get gel overlays for your usual mattress and bedsore pads to relieve pressure on painful spots on your body.

Low Air Loss Mattress vs Alternating Pressure Mattress

Low air loss mattresses and alternating pressure mattresses have some common uses. However, they are both quite different from each other.

As we have mentioned before, an alternating pressure mattress has air cells that inflate and deflate alternatively, distributing pressure throughout the body.

A low air loss mattress has thousands of small holes on its surface.

Air slowly flows out of these holes, and new air is simultaneously pumped inside the mattress to maintain the pressure.

While alternating pressure mattresses only distribute pressure throughout the body, low air loss mattresses lower pressure on the body and also reduces heat and moisture on the skin for the maximum comfort of the patient.
